💡 The Challenge
Despite having Asthma Action Plans (AAPs), families:
Can’t always tell which “zone” their child is in
Don’t remember or understand what steps to take
Often have outdated or inaccessible plans
May not know if their inhaler is empty or expired
We asked: How might we help caregivers make timely, confident decisions about asthma care?
🔍 Our Research
We interviewed 8 families, 2 pediatricians, and 1 school nurse.
Key insights:
Paper-based AAPs are hard to interpret
Kids can’t always articulate symptoms
Stressful moments = low recall on what the plan instructed
Parents want reminders about daily medication and simple steps in emergencies
🧩 Our Solution
We created a mobile companion that:
Tracks symptoms and medication use
Identifies asthma zones automatically
Offers zone-specific guidance from the AAP
Alerts users when inhalers are running low or expiring
✏️ Design Highlights
1. Guided Onboarding
We walk users through entering their child's asthma history, medications, and care plan.

2. Symptom Tracking & Alerts
Parents log symptoms daily and get zone-based guidance (e.g., “You’re in Yellow Zone – use Albuterol now”).
📸 (show symptom tracking flows from columns 5–6)
3. Smart Action Plan
We translated the paper AAP into a dynamic, interactive format that updates based on inputs.

✅ Outcomes
Final prototype tested with 3 families: “It’s so much easier to follow than the paper.”

🔁 Reflection
This project deepened my understanding of:
Translating clinical documents into usable interfaces
Designing for moments of stress
Balancing clarity and customization in health tools
A mobile app that empowers families of children with asthma to better understand and act on their Asthma Action Plan.
Children with asthma often struggle because their caregivers don’t have the right information at the right time. BreatheEasy helps families confidently manage symptoms before they become emergencies.
